Philosophy

The School of the Arts at CSU is a professional school offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and art, as well as undergraduate degrees in theatre arts and dance. Our mission is to identify and train outstanding creative and scholarly talent in the arts. Our goal is to build the skills and knowledge needed by future generations of arts professionals - be it in performance, creative production and design, education, therapy, or research – to become contributors to the essential vitality of our culture and society and advance knowledge in the arts through discovery, dissemination, teaching, and preservation.

Our faculty have national and international reputations, but are committed as resident faculty to building nurturing educational relationships with their students in an interactive and dynamic fashion. We offer a wide variety of programs in the visual arts and performing arts, ranging from artistic and performance centered to academic and research centered to education and pedagogy oriented. The School strives to continuously develop and implement cutting-edge approaches to discovery and education in the arts. A passionate commitment to a comprehensive and innovative BAUHAUS philosophy of continuous renewal and innovation in the visual and performing arts creates a supportive and encouraging yet challenging environment for our students to develop their talents to the fullest. What makes the School unique is the synergistic and comprehensive view to embrace and integrate all approaches to professional training in the arts to build future professionals who have a balanced emphasis on artistry and scholarship, innovation, leadership skills, and professional career development.

The School has a student body of about 1100 students with a faculty over 100 members, allowing for a high-level of personal interaction, critical in education of the arts. The students can draw on the vast resources of a comprehensive research university to enhance their training across disciplines.

A city of about 130,000, Fort Collins offers an exceptional environment for students in the arts through a community that is closely connected to activities in the School. Fort Collins has a thriving cultural and artistic community and is consistently ranked as one of the best or the best place to live in the country. Its culture and its inviting Old Town architecture are complemented by its prime location immediately at the foot of the Rocky Mountains with breathtaking scenery and an almost infinite opportunities for first-rate outdoor activities.
